3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life balance & well-being habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I.

I enjoy watching beautiful sailboats gliding through a harbor and heading to the open seas. There seems to be something unique, something special between the vessel and the sailor.

Perhaps it is the sailor’s ability to understand the needs of the sailboat. If left unattended, the boat drifts and bounces, becoming a victim of circumstances of the wind and sea. If managed correctly, the sailor consistently prioritizes staying the course while navigating the events of the never-ending changing winds and seas.

II.

Much like how a sailor must set a course, raise the sails, monitor, and make course corrections because of the changing elements, we must set a course to balance our priorities, take action, and embody self-awareness to adjust our daily behaviors.

When we monitor our daily behaviors, whether in real-time or in a reflective state at the end of the day, we can choose how to make our course corrections. Our adjustments should always seek the optimal path toward aligning our daily behaviors with our priorities in life.

III.

Whether it’s your course, family, friends, or mine, we are all trying to sail a similar course. We desire to journey the seas of life with a balance of wellness, loving relationships, and service to others. Much like how a sailor balances the needs of the sailboat, when we effectively balance our physical, mental, and spiritual health, we are optimizing our journey toward success with our families and career.

How we chart our life course and adjust is strictly our responsibility. If we choose to float and blame the circumstances we experience along our path, we become unaccountable and victims of imbalance. However, when we accept accountability to adjust our actions, we are sailing our way to a victorious balance.

 2 Quotes from Others

I.

“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

– Jimmy Buffett, Singer & Song Writer

II.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.”

– Romans 12:2

 1 Question for You

As you are sailing toward a victorious balance, what one adjustment to your daily behaviors would optimize your alignment with your priorities?

Dr. Donnie’s Answer:  I sometimes need to slow my course.  I can get sailing fast and lose sight of the small ways I get off course.  The seas can get choppy whether that is with my morning routines, praising my God with gratitude, giving my wife my best each day, or checking in with my young adult children. The one adjustment that I can make is to ensure each day is set-up with my proven morning routine. When I stick to my morning gratitude, prayer, and exercise routine, all else seems to fall right into place.
