3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life balance & well-being habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I.

My wife and I recently enjoyed listening to live music in St. Augustine. It was a small outdoor venue that featured local artists. The crowd sang along to one of the songs while air drumming and stomping their feet with the rhythms. Then, the strangest thing happened. The drummer went offbeat.

The guitar player and singer kept the rhythm going while the drummer chose to pause, assess, and adjust. It only took him a few seconds to make the adjustments, and he was back in rhythm in no time.

II.

This experience reminds me of how our work-life balance ebbs and flows. A steady rhythm to our healthy behaviors keeps us in a relative state of balance. The tempo of our actions can fluctuate with some variability without a noticeable effect on our desired balance state.

There are similarities between going offbeat as a drummer and going offbeat with our balance in life. Our offbeats with balance often surface as missed exercise workouts, missed family time, entertainment of negative thoughts, and procrastination of our desired behaviors.

III.

We can learn much from the drummer by pausing, assessing, and adjusting our actions when we assess our offbeat tempo. We can restore our rhythm of balance by making a few minor adjustments to our daily routines.

Perhaps the next time you feel like something is off balance in your life, imagine pausing to access what is out of rhythm. Once identified, imagine yourself quickly adjusting your actions. When you do this, you will be embracing your rhythms of balance, and your family will see you as their rock star.

2 Quotes from Others

I.

“In life, when you start to fall, you don’t have to go crazy, scolding yourself and further throwing yourself off balance. Instead, simply make adjustments.”

~ Brenda Strong, American Actress

“Happiness is not a matter of intensity, but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony.”
–     Thomas Merton, American Trappist Monk

1 Question for You

Take a moment to pause and assess your exercise rhythms, mental fitness, social rhythms, spiritual rhythms, family relationships, and work rhythms. What one action could you start or stop doing that could bring that offbeat role in your life back into a rhythm?

Dr. Donnie’s Answer:  My one action to get me back into rhythm is to return to strength training. Over the past three weeks, my life got out of rhythm with travel and college kids coming home for the summer. Something had to give, and it was spending time in the gym. I feel out of rhythm from the lack of positive spillover my mental health receives from my physical training.
