In episode 14, I have a serious, yet uplifting discussion with firefighter and EMT-P, Brandon Dreiman of Local 416. In 2012, after many years of numerous trauma experiences that began at age 16, Brandon was surprised by a random drug and alcohol screening. He blew positive. He received a suspension. It opened his eyes after years of abuse. I learned at least four lessons in this discussion and they are: Random screenings can get people’s attention. Speaking with a culturally competent social worker is a good starting point for recovery. Recovery and marriage counseling can save your family. Effective self-care practices are a must in the recovery stage. Brandon’s passion for sharing his story throughout the country is inspiring and just might help others who are in need of that little extra nudge to contact their peer support team to get the help they need.
