3 Ideas from Me

I.

Driving through the Midwest farmlands, one often sees a beautiful shade tree in the middle of a crop field. The shade tree’s purpose is to provide the farmer with a place to rest and relax from the sun.

Much like how a tree comforts a farmer, our lives are filled with healthy habits that comfort our families and us. Some people have been reaping the benefits of healthy exercise and proper nutrition for many years. Others might attain great satisfaction from positive self-talk, gratitude, and prayer.

II.

Some people I have enjoyed meeting in my work-life balance workshops have shared their displeasure with spending many years choosing unhealthy habits and neglecting to implement healthy ones. What they often shared with me was the ole, could’ve, would’ve, and should’ve.

When we look back on our lives, all of us can list things we wish we had started earlier. It might be related to our health, relationships, education, or work. We long for the benefits of healthy habits that we never started.

III.

I heard of this farmer who gifted his son a large tract of land across the valley. His son thanked him and said, “Dad, my farmland doesn’t have a great shade tree in the middle as yours.” The son wanted a shade tree like his dad’s and asked, “Hey, dad, when’s the best time to plant a tree? His father answered, “50 years ago, son. His son thought about that briefly and then asked, “When’s the next best time? “Today,” his father answered.

Our yesterdays are gone. We live today. As the farmer’s son learned, we can choose the second best time available to start a new healthy habit – Today.
