3-2-1: Discovering the Sounds of Work-Life Balance
| July 10, 2024
3 Thoughts from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Call-to-Action Question to help you reflect on your work-life balance and well-being habits this week.
3 Thoughts from Me
I.
The daily sounds our body, mind, and spirit make are indicators of our balance. They indicate how well we manage our physical, mental, social, spiritual, family, and career health.
You might be thinking, Doc, “The only sounds my body emits are the noises of creaks, groans, and pain.” Well, that might be true; however, when we tune our ears inward, we can listen to many more sounds.
II.
Have you ever listened to your rapid heartbeat during a vigorous workout? That is a sound of meeting a physical health self-care need.
Have you ever listened to the internal sounds of choosing what you want to think about, such as positive and grateful thoughts? Those are the sounds of mental fitness.
Have you ever heard the sounds of laughter, excitement, and someone telling you, I love you? Those are sounds that satisfy your social and family relationship needs.
III.
During work, have you ever listened to the sounds of “Great job, thank you, and I don’t know what I would have done without you?” Those are the sounds of meaning and accomplishment at work.
From my research and personal experience, I learned that when we often hear many of the sounds listed above during the day, we will discover the sound of work-life balance at night. It occurs when we rest our heads on the pillow and hear nothing. Silence is the beautiful sound of peace within our mind, body, and spirit.
2 Quotes from Others
I.
“True silence is the rest of the mind, and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.“
— William Penn, 17thCentury English Writer
” Peace be with you.”

1 Call-to-Action Question for You
Are you hearing the sound of peace before you fall asleep? If not, which area in your work-life balance is trying to speak to you, and what is it saying?
Dr. Donnie’s Answer: Work. I have several exciting projects in the planning stage, and I’m eager to begin working on them. My window of time for this work starts now. I’ve been waiting for a break from traveling to create and produce the materials I’ve had in my mind for many months. Let’s Go!
