3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life balance and well-being habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I.

We can learn much from those who have existed and gone before us. Many focused on working long hours, including overtime, up to retirement age to maximize their financial wealth for their retirement years.

Attaining financial security for our retirement is critical for peace of mind. We learn money allows us to enjoy our senior years throughout our Lifespan. Granted, it helps, but it could benefit from a partner.

II.

Lifespan, the chronological years we exist on earth, is the focal point of financial planning. A financial plan aims to ensure we have enough money to care for our living and health needs while hoping to leave something behind for our loved ones.

Unfortunately, these plans focus on our years of existence, not our years of optimizing our physical and mental health independence (aka Healthspan). Healthspan is the length of time a person lives a healthy life, not just exist.

III.

Work-life balance promotes aligning our daily behaviors with our priorities in life. I believe most of us desire our Healthspan to match our Lifespan so we can enjoy all our years of living. Therefore, maybe our Lifespan should ask for our Healthspan’s hand in marriage.

When we do, we might find ourselves running joyfully through life, enjoying everything our relationships, purpose, and earth have to offer daily. If we time it right, our Lifespan and Healthspan will cross the finish line with their winning hands held tightly together in the air and smiling, saying, “Wow, what a Life!”

 2   Quotes from Others

I.

“I approach each day as an opportunity to enjoy life. I try to extract all I can from every moment of every day.”

–      Participant 003. Work-Life Balance Attributes of Self-Care with Authentic Leaders: A Multiple Case Study (Hutchinson, D. 2018).

II.

“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

–      1 Corinthians 6: 19-20

 1 Question for You

Are you worried about your Healthspan keeping up with your Lifespan? If so, what steps would you like to take today to improve your situation?

Dr. Donnie’s Answer:  The short answer is “No.” Health and well-being have generally been a focal point in my daily living my entire adult life. I know exercise will always be a part of who I am. However, an opportunity for improvement resides in my diet, hydration, and enjoying the juice from the grape. As we all know, balance and moderation are the keys to success. My improvement step is to match and align my food and beverage consistency with my exercise consistency. When I do this, I optimize my physical health, which will positively spill over and benefit my mental health.
