3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life balance & well-being habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I.

The peaks and valleys we must navigate in our quest for balance are much like our experiences with driving a car. We travel the roads in life much like we travel the streets in our communities.

Just as the potholes in streets develop from excess wear and tear or a significant event, our lives are subject to hitting potholes. Ours could be from insufficient sleep, exercise, relationships, negative thoughts, or a critical incident.

II.

Much like how a car will pull left or right after running over a pothole, we can experience being pulled out of balance. Before we know it, we are off course. When we first recognize we are being pulled away from our desired life balance, we can save a lot of health and relationship repairs and costs by scheduling an alignment.

When our cars hit a pothole, and our front end goes out of alignment, we schedule an alignment at the auto shop. In the same sense, when we hit potholes in life, and our daily behaviors go out of alignment, we can schedule the fix.

III.

I encourage you to examine your balance and see if you’ve been driving with behaviors that are aligned or out of alignment with your priorities in life. If you’re having trouble with alignment, please consider scheduling the fix with my Work-Life Balance Transformation online course or contacting a culturally competent therapist if they are out of alignment.

Developing a proactive maintenance plan on re-aligning your daily behaviors with your priorities in life is like having a full-service maintenance plan on your car. Our cars and we need a service plan because we both experience hitting potholes while driving.

 2   Quotes from Others

I.

“Life at any time can become difficult: life at any time can become easy. It all depends upon how one adjusts oneself to life.”

~ Morarji Desai, Former Prime Minister of India

 II.

” Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

– Romans 12:2

 1 Question for You

When you hit potholes while driving to a balanced life, what do you do to re-align your behaviors with your priorities in life?

Dr. Donnie’s Answer:  I put myself in a place of quietness, and I slow my thoughts. I pray. I listen. I sit in this quiet space until a thought or idea appears. I test the thought through prayer and meditation. I listen for confirmation. If received, I take action. I also participate when I conduct my workshops. I use the workbook journal and take notes during the reflective exercises.
