3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life balance & well-being habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I.

I don’t know about you, but I carry a mental list of things I want to do. These items in my mind range from cleaning up the garage to incorporating bike riding into my physical training. The list often is long and can sometimes be exhausting.

Many of us find ourselves saying, “One day soon, I’m going to ______ ” fill in the blank. You might think, one day, I’ll spend more time with my spouse; one day, I’ll attend my child’s game; one day, I’ll get healthier. The list can go on and on. For some reason, we often discover that “one day” is not today.

II.

Procrastination is the magical habit of delaying or postponing doing something. I say magical because many of us didn’t need to practice it for it to become a habit. It just mystically appeared in our lives. If discipline worked the same, how might our lives be different?

I have found a mental trick that helps me avoid putting things off another day. It is not foolproof, but it does improve my productivity. For example, when it is time for me to run four miles and I don’t have the energy or interest, I tell myself to stop thinking about it, put my shoes on, and go outside. I have found telling myself to stop thinking and start doing is an effective way to increase success in an activity.

III.

Avoiding procrastination and building up our discipline muscles improve by keeping our priorities top-of-mind. My priorities include God, self-care, family, teaching, and friendships. All our priorities benefit from doing something positive today and not putting it off until tomorrow.

So if you find your spouse asking you multiple times to clean up your garage and you’ve been putting it off as I have, remember they are a priority in your life. Perhaps the next time we think, “Not today, but one day, we should try to procrastinate our procrastination. When we do, we flip the script and take a stance, Not One Day, But Today!

— “Hey honey, I’ll be in the garage”.

2 Quotes from Others

I.

I can do everything through Him who strengthens me.

  • Philippians 4:13

II.

“Procrastination is my weakness. It only brings me sorrow.

I know I should give it up. In fact I will – – tomorrow.
