3 Ideas from Me

I.

Have you ever wondered why exercise fitness centers are so inexpensive to join? For instance, Planet Fitness, a well-established and successful gym, charges only $10 monthly for membership. Many other national and regional gyms are similar in providing affordable pricing models.

When I run the numbers, it doesn’t seem like they could earn enough money to keep the doors open. However, many don’t realize that the number of monthly subscribers far exceeds the number of monthly users. You see, 67 percent of people who join the gym keep paying their monthly memberships but don’t use the gym. They become another statistic of the All or Nothing Culture.

II.

Our culture has ingrained in us that we must reach for perfection in our new healthy behaviors to achieve success. We must be “All In.” If we fail to reach that mark, our culture leans toward the “Ahh, screw it,” and we do nothing.

Thriving in today’s culture is comprised of the antithesis of the All or Nothing Culture. To live a fulfilling and thriving life, we would be better suited to pursue balance. We can easily pursue balance by giving ourselves more grace, kindness, and love. I’ll explain what I mean with a true story.

III.

One of my workshop attendees went home with the plan of exercising three times per week. I asked him a month later how did it go. He said, “The first week was great; I exercised three times. The second week, I got busy and only exercised twice. The third week got even busier, and I exercised just once”. He said, “You see that trendline Doc, three, two, one, and then I said screw it, I quit. That All or Nothing Culture is real.

I responded, “My friend, I see how you’re looking at your exercise trendline data. It went three times, then twice, then just once over three weeks, and you quit. I said, “If you give yourself more grace, kindness, and love, the next time you judge yourself so harshly, you will reap the rewards of thriving in our “All or Nothing Culture.” I suggest you reframe the way you’re looking at your trendline data. You saw 3:2:1 and then stopped. I’m seeing 3+2+1, which means you exercised six times in three weeks. What did you do in the previous three weeks?
