3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life wellness and balance habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I.

No one wants to get hit by a dangerous speeding bullet. I believe we have natural tendencies and conscious choices to take cover when speeding bullets begin to fly. We not only protect ourselves, but we do our best to ensure our loved ones are protected against harm.

When we protect ourselves and others from danger, we receive instant gratification for a job well done. In today’s culture, instant gratification is the gold standard. The dichotomy we often struggle with is in choosing healthy behaviors that do not provide instant gratification. These are actions that deliver slow-moving, long-term results.

II.

Eating a healthy diet, exercising, routinely dating your spouse, spending time with your children even when you’re exhausted, winding down before going to bed, and connecting with your spiritual self through prayer or nature are some examples of daily actions that deliver long-term, fulfilling results.

I have no doubt we would take cover and protect ourselves successfully from a speeding bullet. However, we are at very low risk of encountering speeding bullets. On the other hand, perhaps we should focus on the high risk, dangerous slow-moving bullets.

III.

I’m hopeful all of us will want to do a better job when we consider uncontrolled high blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, lack of exercise, poor diet, overindulgence of alcohol, negative self-talk, putting family and spirituality on the back burners, and sleep deprivation as slow-moving bullets. Although they move slowly, they are most dangerous since our behavioral health/preventable diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States.

Just as we can make a conscious choice to move out of the way of a speeding bullet, we also have the cognitive ability to make behavioral choices to protect ourselves from slow bullets. In doing so, we put ourselves on a healthy path that will lead to a long and fulfilling life for you and your loved ones to enjoy. Now that’s what I consider the ultimate gratification!

2 Quotes from Others

I.

“Lifetime regrets are more painful than delayed gratification.”

~ Dawn Graham, Author

II.

You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.

” ― 1 Corinthians 6:12
