3 Ideas from Me

I.

Many of us have embarked on new year’s resolutions with various levels of success. Last week we evaluated our good, somewhat acceptable, and bad habits using a traffic signal as the metaphor.

Much like how red lights at intersections stop traffic flow, bad habits stop our work-life balance and well-being journeys.

II.

After watching and waiting for my proverbial red light habits to turn green in 2022, I realized red lights don’t change color. They are either on or off. A red light does not turn green; its illumination stops and is REPLACED with a bright green light.

Behavioral science supports the idea that habits get replaced by other habits, either good, somewhat acceptable, or bad. Therefore, let’s design our 2023 travel plans to resemble a traffic signal smart grid. These grids are designed to turn the red lights off and green lights on as you approach intersections.

III.

Imagine how effective your daily behaviors would be if you began traveling toward your priorities in life through a series of green lights.

Let’s turn imagination into reality. We can do this by replacing red light worry with green light gratitude, social media with in-person connection, eating on the go with family dinners, or exercising tomorrow with exercise today.
