3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life wellness and balance habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I,

My teaching has defined work-life balance as aligning our daily behaviors with our priorities in life.

Often, we can be very good at this in some areas of our lives and not so good in others. The challenge is to manage the ebb and flow of our balance while not letting something get too far off course.

II.

Asking ourselves what needs our attention seems logical and probably shouldn’t be a one-and-done activity. I asked myself this question most days last year. I found asking this question triggers our conscious awareness in making behavioral adjustments quickly and effectively.

I have also discovered that becoming consciously aware of what needs our attention each morning may not be sufficient. I’ve realized that my 6:30 a.m. prayer, gratitude, and meditation session on what needs my attention are strongest in the morning and fade throughout the day.

III.

When our attention in the late afternoon on aligning our behaviors with our priorities in life fades, it can lead us down a path of misalignment. Sometimes, this lack of attention can lead to overeating, skipping a workout, wasting time on social media, or not being fully present with our families.

Like you, I do not want to waste precious time on behaviors and activities that don’t bring me value because I leave them unchecked. I wonder how much more fulfilled and happier we could be if we took two opportunities each day to assess what needs our attention now.

2 Quotes from Others

I.

“Attention is psychic energy, and like physical energy, unless we allocate some part of it to the task at hand, no work gets done.”

— Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi,  Hungarian-American Psychologist

II.

These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”

 — 1 Corinthians 2:10

1 Question for You

Think of your physical, mental, and spiritual health, family relationships, and work…What needs your attention now?

Dr. Donnie’s Answer: I do a pretty good job focusing on important morning and early afternoon activities.  However, when 5:00 p.m. comes around, my attention to priorities has faded.  It becomes more of an unguided exploration of the evening. My evening actions could benefit from taking time at the end of the day for prayer, meditation, and choosing the most important items I want to achieve during the evening. In other words, taking time each afternoon to pause, reflect, and think about what needs my attention now.
