3 Ideas from Me

I.  My Mantra

“Don’t Think, Just Do” are the magical four words I’ve adopted to combat procrastination—a challenge I overcame through trial, error, and success. This mantra serves as a decisive cue to act, especially useful after the planning phase has been completed. I stumbled upon the effectiveness of this approach during a pivotal adjustment in my daily routine; specifically, the shift of my exercise time from noon to early morning, right after my prayer and meditation sessions.

The decision to alter my exercise schedule was not made lightly. It was the result of thorough thinking and planning, aimed at optimizing my mornings. The simple act of setting a new time for physical activity may seem straightforward, but integrating such a change into my lifestyle was anything but easy.

II.  Overcoming Resistance

This adjustment required not only a change inhabit but also a steadfast commitment to my new schedule despite the initial discomfort and resistance. Despite this well-laid plan, each morning presented a challenge. Upon hearing my alarm an hour earlier than usual, my first thought often was resistance—”I’m tired, why not just exercise at noon?” Recognizing this as a moment of procrastination, I would then firmly tell myself “Don’t think, just do” out loud, three times.

III.  Action Precedes Routine

This ritual helped shift my mindset from hesitation to action without further debate. Following this immediate and non-negotiable response, my morning would proceed smoothly: I would get up, make coffee, and then head to my lanai with my Bible for a time of reflection and communion with God.

This peaceful start leaves me rejuvenated and perfectly poised to transition into my exercise session. The rest of the morning flows naturally, allowing me to begin my workday as planned, but only after dedicating an hour to my physical exercise. This method proves that the real “thinking” — the planning and decision-making — is done well ahead of the action. By the time my alarm rings, there’s no need to reconsider my choices; the path for my morning activities has already been set.
