3 Ideas from Me

I.

Like many of you, I had much fun looking through a telescope when we were kids. We looked at the stars, moon, birds, and city lights miles away.

As children, we were amazed at how the telescope brought the objects that existed far away much nearer. It was as if we could almost reach out and touch it. Although we were just kids, we knew the objects that appeared so large were actually small when we looked at them with our bare eyes.

II.

Looking through a telescope reminds me of how some approach daily living. They begin their mornings by thinking about their challenges and problems, some perceived and some real. These thoughts lead to unpleasant feelings, which often lead to unhealthy actions.

They have a habit of allowing their negative thoughts to dominate their mindful inner dialogue. Once that happens, they pull out their mental telescope and begin seeing the problem much larger than reality. Their perspective of the challenge goes from “X” to “10X,” often leading to feelings of defeat and inaction.

III.

I imagine none of us are exempt from viewing our problems through the telescope. Believe me, I’ve had my share of challenges. However, I’ve learned over the years that the habit of picking up the telescope is not the source of viewing our problems as big and insurmountable. The cause is simply we are looking through the wrong end of the telescope.

The next time you find yourself making a mountain out of a molehill, try flipping the telescope. When you flip the scope, everything you see becomes “10X” smaller. Suddenly, our challenging issues become solvable with less worry and grief.

2 Quotes from Others

I.

“Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

– Dr. Seuss

II.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

– Matthew 19:26

1 Question for You

Think back to a time when you made a mountain out of a molehill. How could you have benefited from flipping the telescope? How would it have benefited others? Take a moment and reflect. You’ve got this!
