3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life balance & well-being habits this week.
3 Ideas from Me
In business, many leaders develop strategic relationships. They intend to help each organization and its people move with speed and meaningful direction. 2+2=4; however, with a healthy collaborative partnership, 2+2=5 or more.
Much like how leaders of organizations embrace strategic partners, it is wise for us as leaders in our work-life balance to embrace them. My good friend Heith Good, an Ohio firefighter and IAFF peer support trainer says it perfectly. He teaches firefighters to surround themselves with a Circle of Life. Make friends and learn from highly effective people your age, older and younger.
As we seek such key relationships, it is wise to use care when selecting collaborative allies, whether in business or personal life. I have found Stephen M. R. Covey’s attributes of trust to be very helpful when evaluating partners. He stresses trust as integrity, intentions, capability, and results.
Does a person’s “yes” mean “yes,” and their “no” mean “no” (Integrity)? Do they have your best interest at heart (Intentions)? Are they capable of doing what they say they are going to do? Lastly, do they have a record of delivering results? An effective partner who you can unequivocally trust, according to Covey, succeeds in all four areas.
We learn much from each other, especially those we invite into our lives. The process of developing collaborative relationships is ongoing and never-ending. I will admit I can sometimes get set in my ways. That’s why I need to lean on my solid connections of yesterday and be open to the new relationships of tomorrow. We often live and grow in unchartered waters and having a little guidance and help benefits everyone.
Perhaps the next time you feel deep in your soul that it is time to make some work-life balance and behavioral changes, please consider being open to strategic partners. With the right collaborative relationships, your2+2 will begin to equal a life of balance and wellbeing. Frankly, can one even quantify what that’s worth?
2 Quotes from Others
“Always do the right thing. Take care of everyone. Remember, there are no secrets in the fire service.”
~ Chief Todd LeDuc (Ret), Chief Strategy Officer, Life Scan Wellness Centers
“I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.”
– Mother Teresa, Founder of the Missionaries of Charity.
1 Question for You
One of your trusting strategic partners says, “Hey, have you considered the direction and speed you are going in _______ (fill in blank) area of your life? What is that area, and what would be the course correction you would hear from your trusted friend/partner?
Dr. Donnie’s Answer: One of the areas of a needed course correction is with my work. The speed at which I’m training first responders on work-life balance and wellbeing is limited by my time. Therefore, I’m looking toward strategic partners/friends that embrace my life’s calling to help me broaden my educational delivery system.
