3 Ideas from me, 2 Quotes from others, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life wellness and balance habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I. We’ve all heard this message from our pilots’ numerous times. We stow our personal items, secure our tray tables, clean our area by disposing of all rubbish and fasten our seatbelts. The descent and preparation for the landing process appear to be a timeless principle in air travel.

Why? Because it has produced favorable results for decades. Processes are in place to lessen the chances of unwanted outcomes.

II.

My aviation theme writing over the past two weeks has awakened me. I’ve realized that my morning habit of “Preparing My Day for Take Off” produces favorable results. Also, my daily and afternoon processes are generally effective. Carpe Diem is, thankfully, the standard.

However, as the day winds down, I recognize that I don’t have a systematic “Preparation for Landing” process. I don’t have a flight plan to greet my loved ones and prepare myself for a good evening. Therefore, I’ve given control to luck which is unsettling to me.

I found a writing journal I purchased about a year ago and have not used. It is titled Carpe Noctem. Seize the night. A coincidental find? I think not. My evening flight path just landed in my hands; I must prepare my landing process.

III.

“What do we want to achieve in our evening hours? How do we mitigate unwelcome outcomes? Perhaps experience greater joy, entertainment, and connection with loved ones. Favorable results usually require intentional planning. Stow the work and become engaged in the present moment.

Authenticity is usually helpful, so I am sharing my first preparation for landing process. I am setting a daily alarm on my phone for 5:55 pm. I will stop what I’m doing and open my Carpe Noctem journal. I will take a few minutes to reflect and write my plan for a successful descent and landing. I will remember to keep my seatbelt fastened as I taxi to the gate. My preparation for landing will direct my evening behaviors to support my priorities in life. Carpe Diem and Carpe Noctem are co-pilots; therefore, I know I’m cleared to fly at night. Welcome to Priority Town, U.S.A, where the local time is 5:55 pm.

2 Quotes from Others

In memory of Chief Halton…

I.

What we do, and how we behave on and off the job matters. Go be successful in all areas of life.”

– Bobby Halton, American Firefighter, Chief Editor Fire Engineering, and Friend to many in the Fire Service.

II.

Choose your intention carefully and then practice holding your consciousness to it, so it becomes the guiding light in your life.”

– Roger Delano Hinkins, American Author

1 Question for You

What changes to your preparation for landing process would you like to make? How would your changes impact your descent and landing?

In memory of Chief Bobby Halton. The American Firefighter.
