3 Ideas, 2 Quotes, and 1 Question to help you reflect on your work-life wellness and balance habits this week.

3 Ideas from Me

I.

“My family and I have been preparing for our first hurricane as Ian is approaching. I picked up my daughter and her roommate from the University of Tampa on Monday. My wife and I learned that we need an adequate supply of food, water, ice, and shelter.

We are planning on losing electric power and water. We have extra water for drinking, modified bathing, and toilet flushing. We will be cooking on a gas grill. Our freezers are filled with ice and food. We are following the advice of our local fire chief. We are trying our best to manage the basics effectively.”

II.

“As I prepared for Ian, I realized the similarities between preparing for a hurricane and work-life balance (WLB). The similarities are grounded in mastering the basics. In living a balanced life, we must master the basics of self-care.

Effective self-care is about managing our physical, psychological, social, and spiritual health needs. When we effectively manage our self-care, we set ourselves up for greater success with our family relationships and careers. We now have evidence-based research that supports this claim.

III.

“One of the most important things to know is that when we effectively satisfy one of our self-care needs, it often spills over and helps us fulfill our other needs. For example, all of the participants in my research study stated they are more effective at work and have more energy when they exercise and pray in the morning.

The participants took time to be aware of their spillover. They disciplined themselves to prioritize satisfying their self-care needs producing positive spillover.”

2 Quotes from Others

I.

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”

– Mother Teresa.

II.

“Self-care is not a luxury, nor is it indulgent. It is not selfish, it is selfless. By taking care of yourself you become the best person you can be. Both for yourself and others.”

– Author unknown
